Development of a national-scale framework to characterise transfers of N, P and Escherichia coli from land to water

M. S. Srinivasan et al.

Summary: A hydrological framework was developed in New Zealand to assess the potential impacts of land activity on water quality. It utilized a flow partition approach and emphasized the importance of local catchment knowledge. The framework provides a consistent and relatively rapid approach for identifying contaminant transfer pathways from land to water.

Quantifying contaminant losses to water from pastoral landuses in New Zealand II. The effects of some farm mitigation actions over the past two decades

Ross Monaghan et al.

Summary: The study found that some agricultural environmental protection measures implemented in New Zealand over the past few decades have had a certain effect on reducing phosphorus losses, but have not been sufficient to offset the increase in nitrogen losses due to the expansion of dairy land. Nationally, sediment loads have significantly decreased due to afforestation and soil conservation works.

Towards predicting the initiation of overland flow from relatively flat agricultural fields using surface water coverage

Chandra Prasad Ghimire et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the connectivity of overland flow in agricultural soils can be predicted using the soil surface covered in water (A(SW)), which is more easily quantifiable compared to depression storage. Experiments show that rougher soil surfaces delay the initiation of overland flow, with a clear response of flow to A(SW) and the potential for early prediction to be used in modern variable-rate irrigation systems.
