Interdependent evolution of biosynthetic gene clusters for momilactone production in rice

Naoki Kitaoka et al.

Summary: Plants may contain biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) similar to those found in microbes, but with distinct inheritance patterns due to limited to vertical gene transmission. Rice has two unlinked BGCs involved in diterpenoid phytoalexin metabolism. Genetic evidence has shown that a cytochrome P450 (CYP76M8) from one BGC plays a role in momilactone biosynthesis, highlighting the interdependent evolution of these two BGCs in plants.
