Muted cooling and drying of NW Mediterranean in response to the strongest last glacial North American ice surges

Maria Fernanda Sanchez Goni et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the climatic phases termed Heinrich stadials 4 and 5, generated by massive North Atlantic iceberg discharges during the last glacial period. The comparison of various records from the Gulf of Lions and NW Mediterranean reveals a paradoxical situation where lower iceberg discharge during HS 5 is associated with colder and drier conditions compared to HS 4. Local processes such as salinity changes and water column stratification play crucial roles in modulating the regional response to global climate change related to ice-sheet instabilities.
