Inside out and upside-down: The roles of gas cooling and dynamical heating in shaping the stellar age-velocity relation

Jonathan C. Bird et al.

Summary: Kinematic studies of disc galaxies, using individual stars in the Milky Way or statistical studies of global disc kinematics over time, provide insights into how discs form and evolve. The key to success in understanding this process lies in the simulation's dynamically cold multiphase ISM, allowing young stars to form with low velocity dispersion. The evolution of disc galaxies is explained by a model where the decrease in velocity dispersion is due to a decreasing gas fraction over time, resulting in a quasi-stable equilibrium.

Planes of satellites around Milky Way/M31-mass galaxies in the FIRE simulations and comparisons with the Local Group

Jenna Samuel et al.

Summary: The study found that thin or kinematically coherent satellite planes similar to the Milky Way are uncommon in simulations and typically have short lifetimes. However, if satellites similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud are present near the first pericentre, the occurrence of Milky Way-like planes increases significantly. Additionally, the distribution of satellites around the Andromeda galaxy is more common according to the simulations.

Exploring the Galaxy's halo and very metal-weak thick disc with SkyMapper and Gaia DR2

G. Cordoni et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors combined spectroscopic information from the SkyMapper survey and astrometry from Gaia DR2 to investigate the kinematics of 475 stars with a metallicity range of -6.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -2.05 dex. They identified stars dynamically consistent with the Gaia Sausage and Gaia Sequoia accretion events, as well as a small fraction of stars likely escaping from the Galaxy. The study also found a subsample of low |Z(max)|, low eccentricity stars to be the very low-metallicity tail of the metal-weak thick disc population.

Exploring the origin of low-metallicity stars in Milky-Way-like galaxies with the NIHAO-UHD simulations

Federico Setito et al.

Summary: The kinematics of the most metal-poor stars offer insight into the early formation and accretion history of the Milky Way. Results from high-resolution cosmological simulations show a prominent population of low-metallicity stars confined to the disc plane, with the retrograde stars largely brought in during the initial build-up of galaxies after the Big Bang. Prograde planar population is accreted during the later assembly phase, sampling the full galactic accretion history.

Ancient Very Metal-poor Stars Associated with the Galactic Disk in the H3 Survey

Courtney Carter et al.

Summary: By combining data from the H3 Spectroscopic Survey and Gaia, a sample of 482 VMP stars near the Galactic plane were studied to understand their metallicities, alpha element abundances, ages, and orbital properties. The findings suggest that the VMP population has a heterogeneous origin, possibly involving in situ formation in the ancient disk and accretion from a satellite with the same direction of rotation as the ancient disk. The precise measurements of ages for VMP stars on prograde orbits indicate a relatively quiescent merging history for the Galaxy over most of cosmic time.
