Chemical-Physical Treatment for Production of Cellulose Nanofiber from Kenaf Bast Fiber

Safwan Sulaiman et al.

Summary: This paper presents the isolation of kenaf bast fiber to produce cellulose nanofiber (CNF) using chemical-physical treatment. The treated bast fiber showed a smaller diameter distribution range in CNF after bleaching and high-intensity ultrasonication. Chemical treatments successfully reduced hemicellulose and lignin content, while increasing the cellulose content in the fiber. Higher ultrasonication output power led to a smaller CNF diameter size.

Evaluation of hydrophilic cellulose nanofiber dispersions in a hydrophobic isotactic polypropylene composite

Akitoshi Morita et al.

Summary: An effective approach using scattering and microscopic techniques was presented to evaluate the dispersion of hydrophilic cellulose nanofibers in hydrophobic isotactic polypropylene. Characterization of iPP composites reinforced with CNF fibrous fillers showed that the best dispersion results in the molten state coincided with low concentrations of CNFs. This study also observed the effect of CNFs on the acceleration of iPP crystal growth and the morphology around CNF fibrous fillers using different techniques such as wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy.

The role of cellulose nanofibrillated fibers produced with combined supercritical carbon dioxide and high-pressure homogenization process as reinforcement material in biodegradable polymer

Samsul Rizal et al.

Summary: In this study, kenaf bast cellulose nanofibrillated fiber (CNF) was successfully produced using a combined method of supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) and high-pressure homogenization, and its effectiveness was verified using TEM and FTIR analysis. The CNF was then used as reinforcement in polylactic acid, showing improved mechanical, thermal, and wettability properties compared to neat PLA. The production method displayed comparable properties to those produced from conventional methods and showed potential for industrial application.

A comparative study on the effect of homogenization conditions on the properties of the film-forming emulsions and the resultant films

Reza Fattahi et al.

Summary: Emulsions based on licorice essential oil (LEO) prepared under different homogenization conditions showed significant changes in size, surface charge, microstructure, and antibacterial activity when incorporated into carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films. The emulsions enhanced the flexibility and water vapor permeability of the films, with U2 emulsion demonstrating improved antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
