Single pencil beam benchmark of a module for Monte Carlo simulation of proton transport in the PENELOPE code

Nico Verbeek et al.

Summary: The study aimed to benchmark the PENH module by simulating absorbed dose distributions from a single finite spot size proton pencil beam in water. Comparisons with TOPAS and RayStation Monte Carlo simulations showed that PENH had the smallest deviations from experimental data in the core region, while TOPAS performed better in the halo region.

A novel proton counting detector and method for the validation of tissue and implant material maps for Monte Carlo dose calculation

Serdar Charyyev et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to characterize the relative stopping power (RSP) of implants and human tissue mimicking materials using a novel proton counting detector. By tracking protons and analyzing energy spectra, RSP values for metal rods, bone, and different tissues were successfully determined. The proposed method shows potential for validating material and density maps required for proton Monte Carlo dose calculation.
