A Fish Galectin-8 Possesses Direct Bactericidal Activity

Tengfei Zhang et al.

Summary: In the study, a tandem repeat galectin-8 (CsGal-8) was identified and characterized in tongue sole, showing binding and bactericidal effects against a wide range of bacteria. CsGal-8 likely plays a crucial role in immune defense by interacting with and killing bacterial pathogens directly.

Characterization of a Deep Sea Bacillus toyonensis Isolate: Genomic and Pathogenic Features

Jing-chang Luo et al.

Summary: This study reports the isolation and characterization of a B. toyonensis strain, P18, from a deep-sea hydrothermal field, which exhibits strong cytopathic effects on fish and mammalian cells. Comparative genomic analysis revealed unique genes in P18 related to virulence, including toxin-related genes not present in the type strain BCT-7112(T). Inoculation of P18 into fish and mice led to rapid dissemination in host tissues, induction of acute infection, and mortality.
