Instrument for mimicking fast cooling conditions of polymers: Design and case studies on polypropylene

Enrico Carmeli et al.

Summary: A thorough understanding of polymer crystallization kinetics is crucial for designing materials tailored to specific applications. A method for fast cooling preparation of polymers using air and water sprays has been proposed, offering several improvements compared to previous devices. The device was designed to meet safety and cleaning standards in industrial environments and can be easily implemented in any laboratory setting. Preliminary results on isotactic-polypropylenes (iPP) were obtained in a range of cooling rates, demonstrating the versatility of the method for various studies. Ex-situ analysis was conducted using WAXS, DSC, and AFM techniques to characterize the samples.
