Specific Ion Effects on Aggregation and Charging Properties of Boron Nitride Nanospheres

Timea Hegedus et al.

Summary: The charging and aggregation properties of boron nitride nanospheres (BNNSs) were investigated in the presence of electrolytes of different compositions and valences in aqueous suspensions. Mono- and multivalent cations and anions were found to have different influences on the colloidal stability of the particles, with multivalent counterions leading to decreased critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) in line with the direct Schulze-Hardy rule. The presence of coions had a weaker effect on CCCs, following the inverse Schulze-Hardy rule. These findings suggest an intermediate charge density for BNNSs and highlight the importance of considering both mono- and multivalent electrolytes in designing stable BNNS dispersions.
