Assessing impacts of land use policies on environmental sustainability of oasis landscapes with scenario analysis: the case of northern China

Binghua Gong et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impacts of major land-use policies on future LUCC and environmental sustainability of oasis landscapes by developing 56 scenarios with different combinations of six policies and simulating LUCC between 2017 and 2050. The results show that while the policies can control built-up area sprawl and improve regional ecosystem services, they also lead to increased water consumption and exacerbate water stress, indicating the need for more integrated management of water and land resources for comprehensive sustainability improvement.

Assessing human-environment system sustainability based on Regional Safe and Just Operating Space: The case of the Inner Mongolia Grassland

Xuening Fang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the sustainability gaps in the herder-grassland system of Inner Mongolia from 1982 to 2015, finding that grassland productivity experienced unsafe changes between 2000 and 2009, with degradation hotspots mainly located in desert steppes and agro-pastoral transitional zones. While overall wellbeing of herders has improved in recent decades, their income, education, safe drinking water, and social equality have not met the internationally agreed minimum standards of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Re-integrating ecology into integrated landscape approaches

James Reed et al.

Summary: ILAs that aim to balance conservation and development need to incorporate ecological factors and consider potential trade-offs. Re-integrating ecology into ILAs will not only improve ecological understanding, but also generate insights into local and traditional knowledge. Better incorporation of the ecological dimension requires engaging relevant stakeholders using participatory methods.
