Home First! Identification of Hospitalized Patients for Home-Based Models of Care

Seok M. Lim et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the proportion of hospitalized inpatients suitable for home-based inpatient bed substitutive service and examine potential barriers to inpatients receiving home-based care, with functional disability being a common obstacle. Clinicians experienced in home-based care were more adept at identifying suitable patients for this care model compared to ward-based clinicians.

Factors Associated with Step Numbers in Acutely Hospitalized Older Adults: The Hospital-Activities of Daily Living Study

Daisy Kolk et al.

Summary: The study found that step numbers doubled 1 day after discharge, physical performance and steps during hospitalization were associated with step numbers after discharge, and step numbers after discharge were related to functional decline 1 month after discharge.

The association of comorbidity measures and mortality in geriatric rehabilitation inpatients by cancer status: RESORT

Cheuk Huen Chan et al.

Summary: In a study of 693 geriatric rehabilitation patients, it was found that CCI and CCI-A scores were significantly associated with higher mortality risk in all three cancer status groups. However, patients with active cancer had a significantly higher 3-month mortality compared to those with no or past cancer, likely due to the advanced nature of the malignancies in this group.

Physical, motivational and environmental factors influencing physical activity promotion during hospitalization: Older patients' perspective

Kira Scheerman et al.

Summary: Better understanding of older patients' perspectives on barriers and enablers in physical activity promotion during hospitalization can help develop strategies to increase in-hospital physical activity. Physically dependent patients were more frequently encouraged by professionals to be physically active compared to independent patients, and focusing on physical barriers and motivational enablers for older patients may help increase their physical activity during hospitalization.

Summary: Higher levels of physical activity and reduced sedentary behavior in older adults are associated with better upper and lower body muscle strength and muscle power. These associations are particularly significant in the chair stand test.

Summary: The study found that objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behavior are associated with frailty in older adults living in the community, regardless of the definition of frailty. Different measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior are all related to frailty.

A systematic review of the physical activity levels of acutely ill older adults in Hospital At Home settings: an under-researched field

Jennifer Scott et al.

Summary: This review aimed to compare the physical activity levels of acutely-ill older patients in 'Hospital At Home' settings with those in traditional hospital inpatient settings, but found a lack of relevant studies. Patients in inpatient settings had low levels of physical activity, indicating the need for further research on the relationship between physical activity and functional decline.
