From Molecules to Polymers-Harnessing Inter- and Intramolecular Interactions to Create Mechanochromic Materials

Hanna Traeger et al.

Summary: The development of mechanophores as building blocks enables the creation of mechanoresponsive and mechanochromic polymer materials for various applications. These materials can detect applied mechanical stresses and strains without breaking covalent bonds, showing reversible and highly sensitive visual mapping of stresses and damage. The design of such materials involves alterations in molecules and polymers without relying on the scission of covalent bonds.

Crystallization-induced mechanofluorescence for visualization of polymer crystallization

Sota Kato et al.

Summary: By introducing tetraarylsuccinonitrile (TASN) into crystalline polymers, researchers were able to visualize and evaluate the stress caused by micro-mechanical forces during polymer crystallization using fluorescence microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. This study provides a new method for studying residual stress in polymeric materials.

Two-step mechanoresponsive luminescence and mechanical stimuli-induced release of small molecules exhibited by a luminescent cyclophane

Yoshimitsu Sagara et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that a cyclophane based on 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene can achieve both two-step mechanoresponsive luminescence and the release of small guest molecules. The manipulation of the emission band by gentle crushing and subsequent grinding, as well as the release of chloroform accompanied by a color change in another polymorph, highlight the potential of luminescent cyclophanes for creating sophisticated mechanoresponsive luminescent materials.
