Soluble ICAM-1 is modulated by hyperbaric oxygen treatment and correlates with disease severity and mortality in patients with necrotizing soft-tissue infection

Morten Hedetoft et al.

Summary: The shedding of intercellular adhesion molecule-1, leading to the release of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), may be modulated by hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment and correlated with disease severity and mortality in patients with necrotizing soft-tissue infection (NSTI). The results suggest that HBO2 treatment has immunomodulatory effects that potentially reduce collateral damage and mortality in critically ill patients with NSTI. Low levels of sICAM-1 are an independent risk factor for mortality and could serve as a prognostic biomarker for NSTI.
