Accelerating computational modeling and design of high-entropy alloys

Rahul Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, a metaheuristic hybrid Cuckoo search (CS) method was used to construct alloy configurational models for high-entropy alloys, enabling efficient computational alloy design. The method allows for global solutions for large, discrete combinatorial optimization problems and has potential applications in real alloys with targeted atomic short-range order.

Calorimetric study of the giant magnetocaloric effect in (MnNiSi)0.56(FeNiGe)0.44

E. Palacios et al.

Summary: (MnNiSi)(0.56)(FeNiGe)(0.44) is a new family of alloys similar to MnAs, displaying a magnetostructural first-order transition near room temperature with a large latent heat and magnetocaloric effect. High values of entropy change have been reported, but discrepancies in values obtained from different methods have been observed. The alloy's high thermal and magnetic hysteresis may limit its use in magnetic refrigeration, but there is potential for derivatives with lower hysteresis and even higher entropy change.
