New Omics-Derived Perspectives on Retinal Dystrophies: Could Ion Channels-Encoding or Related Genes Act as Modifier of Pathological Phenotype?

Luigi Donato et al.

Summary: Ion channels, integral proteins expressed in various organs including the eye, play crucial roles in physiological processes like signal transmission and visual processing. Mutations in these channels and their interacting genes lead to a range of ocular diseases known as channelopathies. By conducting whole exome sequencing experiments on families with inherited retinal dystrophies, researchers found variants in causative genes affecting retinal functionalities. Further investigation revealed mutated genes interacting with neurotransmission pathways, offering new insights for precise diagnosis and treatment of retinal dystrophies.

Comparison of risk allele frequencies of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with age-related macular degeneration in different ethnic groups

Hyun-Tae Shin et al.

Summary: The prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) varies among different races, with Europeans, Americans, and South Asians showing similar SNP heatmap patterns while East Asians and Koreans have distinct patterns. Despite lower AMD prevalence in Asians compared to Europeans, genetic risk scores in East Asians are similar to those in Europeans, which may explain why the global projected number of people with AMD by 2040 is highest for East Asians, including Koreans.
