Thermal energy storage characteristics of binary molten salt nanofluids: Specific heat and latent heat

Daehyeong Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal energy storage characteristics of nanoparticle-doped binary molten salt nanofluids, with a focus on specific heat and latent heat. The effects of chemical composition on specific heat and latent heat were examined in carbonate salt and nitrate salt nanofluids. The study also discussed the enhancement of specific heat and latent heat by doping nanoparticles into the salt mixtures, with considerations on the formation of a compressed liquid layer near the nanoparticles.

Estimating allowable energy flux density for the supercritical carbon dioxide solar receiver: A service life approach

Zhenghua Rao et al.

Summary: The allowable energy flux density on a solar receiver is closely related to its service life and the feasibility of surrounding concentrated solar power plants. This study estimates the allowable energy flux density of a supercritical CO2 coiled tube receiver by simulating temperature, stress, and creep-fatigue damage. The results show that adjustments in inlet temperature or flow rate can help mitigate high temperature and stress areas, ultimately increasing the allowable energy density for receivers.

Thermo-hydraulic performance of nanofluids under adjustable magnetic field

Xinfeng Zhai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of an adjustable magnetic field on the convective heat transfer performance and flow resistance coefficient of water-based Fe3O4 nanofluids under different Reynolds numbers. It was found that the convective heat transfer performance is directly related to the mass fraction, magnetic field strength, and pitch curvature ratio, with an increase in heat transfer efficiency observed with the use of ferrofluid and higher magnetic field strengths. Additionally, different pitch curvature ratios of spiral tubes also affect heat transfer performance.

Simplified force field for molecular dynamics simulations of amorphous SiO2 for solar applications

Argyrios Anagnostopoulos et al.

Summary: A novel set of Lennard-Jones parameters for amorphous silica is proposed in this study, capable of accurately simulating the structure. The existence of a compressed liquid layer at the liquid-nanoparticle interface is observed experimentally, with higher density and lower self-diffusivity of the molten salt mixture in proximity to the interface. Ordered distribution of Na+ and K+ ions is indicated at the interface, suggesting the presence of an ordered double-layer.

Enhanced thermal energy storage of nitrate salts by silica nanoparticles for concentrating solar power

Yaxuan Xiong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the improvement of thermal energy storage performance of molten salts by dispersing silica nanoparticles. Potassium nitrate salt mixed with 20-nm silica nanoparticles shows the highest performance improvement, while sodium nitrate salt nanofluids reach maximum improvement at their decomposing temperature. Cloud nuclei differences among molten salt nanofluids could be the main reason for the enhancement of thermal performance.

Heat capacity and viscosity of ternary carbonate nanofluids

Syed Muhammad Mujtaba Rizvi et al.

Summary: The addition of alumina nanoparticles to ternary carbonate salt mixtures can enhance heat capacity, with the highest enhancement observed at low heating rates. The formation of salt dendritic nanostructures can be influenced by the cycling of heating rates, affecting the heat capacity. The study utilized differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, pH variation method, and a rheometer to characterize the system and observe the effects on heat capacity.
