Thromboangiitis obliterans is a segmental and progressive disease involving inflammation, thrombosis and re-canalisation of medium- and small-sized arteries and veins. The disease is globally prevalent, with smoking being the most significant risk factor. The diagnosis is challenging and treatment options are not fully standardised by well-proven randomised case control studies.
Thromboangiitis obliterans is a segmental, progressive and recurrent inflammation thrombosis and re-canalisation of medium- and small-sized arteries and veins. The disease has a worldwide spread, and smoking appears to be the most important risk factor in these patients; cessation of smoking has been associated with improved limb salvage rates. Diagnosis is elusive, and treatment options are not fully standardised by well-proven randomised case control studies.
