Watchful waiting vs repair for asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic inguinal hernia in men: a systematic review

Hugin Reistrup et al.

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of using a watchful waiting strategy for men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic inguinal hernia. Results showed that this strategy was safe, but approximately two-thirds of patients crossed over to surgical repair within 10 years mainly due to hernia-related pain.

Predictors of chronic pain after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair

Beau Forester et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors for chronic pain after laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. The results showed that female sex, preoperative pain levels, prior hernia repair history, higher ASA class, use of multifilament polyester mesh, and intraoperative urinary catheter placement were associated with an increased risk of chronic pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

Should surgeons repair symptomatic, clinically occult, radiologically evident, inguinal hernias? A case-control study of patient-reported outcomes

M. Aly et al.

Summary: There is no significant difference in pain, restriction of activities, or cosmetic discomfort in symptomatic, clinically occult, radiologically evident inguinal hernia patients following either surgical or conservative management. Further studies are needed to provide better care for this patient population.
