The thermal ecology and physiology of reptiles and amphibians: A user's guide

Emily N. Taylor et al.

Summary: Research on the thermal ecology and physiology of free-living organisms, particularly amphibians and reptiles, is crucial for understanding the impact of climate change on biodiversity. Consistent and optimal methodology is necessary for comparing results across different groups and time periods. Progress in this field has been made with new and improved methods, with potential to further advance our understanding of temperature relations between organisms and their environments in the context of global climate change.

Heat tolerance of reptile embryos: Current knowledge, methodological considerations, and future directions

Joshua M. Hall et al.

Summary: Global warming poses a threat to biodiversity, particularly the vulnerable eggs of non-avian, oviparous reptiles due to their lack of parental care and limited ability to regulate body temperature behaviorally. There is currently a lack of standardized metrics to determine embryo heat stress, hindering comparability across studies and species. More research is needed to assess embryo responses to acute thermal stress, integrate responses to chronic and acute temperatures in predictive models, and identify mechanisms underlying heat tolerance.
