Enhanced Electrokinetic Removal of Heavy Metals from a Contaminated Lake Sediment for Ecological Risk Reduction

Arulpoomalai Ayyanar et al.

Summary: In this study, electrokinetic remediation (EKR) was used to reduce the risk of heavy metal contaminants in lake sediments by determining the optimal concentration of enhancing agents to dissolve heavy metals effectively while maintaining good soil health. The results showed that EDTA, nitric acid, and acetic acid enhanced heavy metal dissolution at different levels. After 21 days of EKR treatment, the average removal of heavy metals ranged from 17.2% to 78.8%, resulting in reduced environmental risk for most heavy metals.

Enhanced electrokinetic remediation (EKR) for heavy metal-contaminated sediments focusing on treatment of generated effluents from EKR and recovery of EDTA

Arulpoomalai Ayyanar et al.

Summary: Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) enhanced with EDTA is an effective technique for treating sediments contaminated with heavy metals. This study focused on optimizing the concentration of chelating agent EDTA and recovering heavy metals from effluents generated during EKR treatment. The results showed that the use of recovered EDTA effectively reduced the risk associated with heavy metals during EKR treatment.
