Long-term exposure to low-level air pollution and incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The ELAPSE project

Shuo Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to low-level air pollution may be associated with the development of COPD, even below current limit values. Traffic-related pollutants NO2 and BC may be the most relevant risk factors.

Long-term low-level ambient air pollution exposure and risk of lung cancer - A pooled analysis of 7 European cohorts

Ulla Arthur Hvidtfeldt et al.

Summary: This study, pooling data from seven cohorts across Europe, found that long-term low-level PM2.5 exposure was associated with lung cancer incidence, even below current EU limit values. There was no observed association between NO2, BC, or O-3 and lung cancer incidence. The results suggest a linear or supra-linear association between PM2.5 exposure and lung cancer risk, with no evidence of a threshold.

Long-term exposure to low-level air pollution and incidence of asthma: the ELAPSE project

Shuo Liu et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and BC air pollutants was associated with an increased risk of adult-onset asthma, even at levels below current limit values. Adjusted for potential confounders, the associations were significant.

Modeling multi-level survival data in multi-center epidemiological cohort studies: Applications from the ELAPSE project

Evangelia Samoli et al.

Summary: The author evaluated methods for analysis of multi-level survival data using a pooled dataset of 14 cohorts to investigate the associations between air pollution exposure and health outcomes. Adjusting for cohort in the analysis led to stable effect estimates, but not adjusting for it resulted in substantial differences. Additionally, adjusting for small area grouping increased the standard errors of effect estimates. The study supports the necessity of accounting for between-cohort heterogeneity in multi-center collaborations using individual level data.

Long-term exposure to fine particle elemental components and lung cancer incidence in the ELAPSE pooled cohort

Ulla Arthur Hvidtfeldt et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between specific elemental components of PM2.5 and lung cancer incidence, with combustion particles from oil and biomass burning and secondary inorganic aerosols showing higher risk. Specific limit values or guidelines targeting these specific PM2.5 components may prove helpful in future lung cancer prevention strategies.
