Bioaccessibility and human exposure to metals in urban soils (Huelva, SW Spain): evaluation by in vitro gastric extraction

Marco Tulio Guillen et al.

Summary: The study assessed the human health risk of heavy metals in urban-peri-urban soils from Huelva Township, finding higher bioaccessibility of heavy metals in industrial areas compared to urban or other areas. Arsenic's carcinogenic risk exceeded regulatory levels, posing higher risks to children, while lead generally did not produce detrimental health effects.

Composition and chemical properties of the soils of the city of Santiago de Compostela, northwestern Spain

Remigio Paradelo et al.

Summary: The study of urban soils in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, revealed that the soils are mostly coarse textured, acidic, and have moderate to high organic matter content. The most abundant exchangeable cation in these urban soils is Ca, and overall, they do not exhibit common features of other urban soils such as alkalinity or high bulk density. The composition of these urban soils is similar to their natural counterparts in the region, highlighting the importance of conserving these soils with a low degree of artificialization for providing ecosystem services.

Simplified performance assessment methodology for addressing soil quality of nature-based solutions

Ryad Bouzouidja et al.

Summary: The study developed a simplified performance assessment methodology to evaluate NBS soil quality, based on the comparison of physical, chemical, and biological characteristics to soil reference baseline. Results from case studies in three European cities show that the basic soil properties and soil fertility of open soil NBS are equivalent to cultivated soils, while the type of natural materials used in the substrate greatly affects the soil quality of GR. FMG's soil quality is significantly impacted by former agricultural practices, while UAGs soils exhibit various concentrations of trace elements depending on former land use, cultural practices, and geological contexts. The study suggests that soil fertility is an important tool in evaluating urban soil quality, but basic soil properties may be influenced by trace element and pesticide contamination.

Soil hardness regulates the root penetration by trees planted on anthropogenic growing bases in coastal forests in Japan: new endeavors to reforest the coastal disaster prevention forests with high resilience for tsunami

Kenji Ono et al.

Summary: This study described the soil features and root development of anthropogenic growing bases in tsunami-prone areas, revealing issues such as thick consolidated pan layers and low water permeability in some growing bases that hindered plant growth. The research quantitatively indicated that physical properties of anthropogenic soils constructed using heavy machinery could be maintained for several decades but emphasized the importance of avoiding compaction during soil preparation to prevent soil hardening, water stagnation, and hindrance of root penetration.

Impact of city historical management on soil organic carbon stocks in Paris (France)

Aurelie Cambou et al.

Summary: The study found that there was a significant increase in SOCS in Paris open soils in 2008-2016 compared to 1993-2007, mainly due to changes in green space management methods. Furthermore, SOCS in Paris was influenced by city history and the type of resource material used for landscaping. The differences in SOCS among city districts reflected a combination of factors such as district history, green space size, management methods, and plant cover types.

Co-benefits and synergies between urban climate change mitigation and adaptation measures: A literature review

Ayyoob Sharifi

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of urban climate change adaptation and mitigation plans in addressing climate change. It highlights the synergistic benefits and interactions between adaptation and mitigation measures, as well as different measures providing co-benefits and synergies. The research calls for more empirical studies to better understand the magnitude of synergistic benefits between different measures.

The relevance of sustainable soil management within the European Green Deal

Luca Montanarella et al.

Summary: The European Green Deal aims to make the European Union the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with ambitious measures including protecting soils, reducing chemical pesticide and fertilizer use, increasing organic farming, restoring polluted areas, and planting billions of new trees. These actions are part of the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Farm to Fork strategy, and the European Climate Law to achieve the ambitious targets set by the Green Deal.
