Petrophysics characteristics of coalbed methane reservoir: A comprehensive review

Qifeng Jia et al.

Summary: The study reviewed recent progress on the petrophysics characteristics of coalbed methane (CBM), focusing on pore-fracture structure, permeability, reservoir heterogeneity, and controlling factors. The characterization of pore-fracture has evolved from qualitative to advanced quantitative methods using high-precision experimental instruments. The effects of acoustic field can increase permeability of coal reservoirs by over 10%, while tectonic stress is crucial in determining permeability and reservoir heterogeneity increases with tectonic deformation and stress field enhancement.

Coal Structure and Its Implications for Coalbed Methane Exploitation: A Review

Lijing Li et al.

Summary: Coal structure, including macroscopic and microscopic deformation, pore structure, and mechanical properties, significantly impacts coal mining safety and coalbed methane (CBM) exploitation. Different coal structures are categorized as primary coals and tectonically deformed coals (TDCs). Various techniques, such as geophysical logging, seismic inversion, SEM, NMR, and FTIR, are used to explore the macro- and microscopic petrophysics of TDCs. Studies have shown that TDCs in the brittle series have potential for CBM exploration, while those in the ductile series pose risks for coal mining and gas outbursts. This review provides insights into the significance of coal structure in CBM exploitation and suggests future research directions.

Diffusion characteristics of methane in various rank coals and the control mechanism

Jiwei Yan et al.

Summary: The methane diffusion behavior in coals was investigated in this study, with experiments conducted on different rank coal samples to analyze pore size distribution and gas adsorption-diffusion behavior. The Langmuir effective diffusion coefficient and its influencing factors were studied, showing that the diffusion coefficient generally rises with pressure and the Langmuir volume increases with R-o, R-m values. Moisture content and coal rank affect gas diffusion differently, with a more significant influence in medium-rank coals.

Applicability Analysis of Determination Models for Nanopores in Coal Using Low-Pressure CO2 and N2 Adsorption Methods

Yunbo Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the abilities of different models to predict pore parameters in coal, with results showing that the NLDFT model maintained a higher fitting accuracy for different gas adsorption processes. The conclusions recommend using LP-CO2GA combined with the NLDFT model for microspore analysis and LP-N2GA combined with the NLDFT model for nanopore analysis.

Influences of hydraulic fracturing on microfractures of high-rank coal under different in-situ stress conditions

Pengwei Mou et al.

Summary: Hydraulic fracturing significantly increases the permeability of coal microfractures by expanding existing fractures rather than inducing new ones. The impact of hydraulic fracturing on microfractures is influenced by the heterogeneity of coal samples and differences in in-situ stress.

Experimental study on the softening effect and mechanism of anthracite with CO2 injection

Qinghe Niu et al.

Summary: Injection of supercritical CO2 into coal seam alters its mechanical properties, leading to softening, strength reduction, and increased deformability, changing the failure patterns. Understanding these changes is crucial for the successful implementation of CO2-ECBM.

Evaluation of pore properties in coal through compressibility correction based on mercury intrusion porosimetry: A practical approach

Yunbo Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of experiments to characterize the accurate pore structure of coal and proposed a new pore volume correction method for MIP data. The relationship model between mercury intrusion pressure and pore diameter was revised, and a new sample preparation method was recommended to minimize interparticle pores effect and pockmark effect in MIP test. The findings of this study have significant impact on future gas transport modeling in various coals.
