The Implications of Landscape Visual Impact on Future Highly Renewable Power Systems: A Case Study for Great Britain

James Price et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the important role of variable renewables (VRE) in decarbonising the energy system. However, cost-optimising models fail to consider the visual impact of VREs, which could undermine their public acceptability. This study uses crowd-sourced data to assess the impact of visual sensitivity on the cost and design of the electricity system in 2050. The results demonstrate that total system costs can increase by up to 14.2% when public sensitivity to visual impact is high.

Land use and turbine technology influences on wind potential in the United States

Anthony Lopez et al.

Summary: This study examines the onshore wind resource potential for the conterminous United States and its sensitivity to siting constraints and turbine technology innovation. The research reveals that siting constraints may significantly impact the total capacity available to commercial wind energy, while technology advancement could require larger setbacks, although this impact is largely offset by increased generation.
