OsPIN9, an auxin efflux carrier, is required for the regulation of rice tiller bud outgrowth by ammonium

Mengmeng Hou et al.

Summary: Nitrogen supply affects rice tillering through polar auxin transport, with ammonium inducing tiller development and promoting OsPIN9 expression, leading to increased number of tillers. Mutants with lower OsPIN9 levels had fewer tillers, while overexpression of OsPIN9 increased tiller number, showing that ammonium induces OsPIN9 expression and regulates tillering in rice.
