Structure of a microtubule-bound axonemal dynein

Travis Walton et al.

Summary: Axonemal dyneins are tethered to doublet microtubules inside cilia to drive ciliary beating, but the mechanisms regulating their localization and function are poorly understood. Authors report a cryo-EM reconstruction of a three-headed axonemal dynein natively bound to doublet microtubules isolated from cilia, providing a framework to understand the roles of individual subunits.

Shulin packages axonemal outer dynein arms for ciliary targeting

Girish R. Mali et al.

Summary: The protein Shulin binds to ODAs in the cytoplasm, inhibits their motor activity, stabilizes their compact form, and facilitates their delivery to the cilia, providing a molecular explanation for the process.

A dynein-associated photoreceptor protein prevents ciliary acclimation to blue light

Osamu Kutomi et al.

Summary: A novel subunit named DYBLUP has been discovered to modulate dynein activity in animal spermatozoa and a unicellular green alga through connecting the f/I1 motor domain and the tether complex. Chlamydomonas lacking the DYBLUP ortholog showed both positive and negative phototaxis, but became acclimated and attracted to high-intensity blue light, suggesting a mechanism to avoid toxic strong light via direct photoregulation of dyneins.
