Cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen during transition from wakefulness to sleep measured with high temporal resolution OxFlow MRI with concurrent EEG

Alessandra Caporale et al.

Summary: During slow-wave sleep, there is a reduction in synaptic transmissions and brain energy consumption. The study utilized OxFlow MRI to noninvasively measure dynamic changes in cerebral metabolism during sleep, revealing negative correlation between cerebral metabolic rate of O2 and delta-power, as well as positive correlation with heart rate following sleep onset. This approach offers new opportunities to study sleep physiology in both healthy individuals and patients with sleep disorders.
