Motor resonance in monkey parietal and premotor cortex during action observation: Influence of viewing perspective and effector identity

Prosper A. Fiave et al.

Summary: Observing others performing motor acts can elicit neural responses in the observer's motor network, with viewpoint and observed effector identity potentially influencing lateralization effects. While conflicting results exist, it is still unclear how these factors modulate motor resonance effects in the monkey brain.

The Role of the Medial Prefrontal Cortex in Moderating Neural Representations of Self and Other in Primates

Masaki Isoda

Summary: The medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) plays a critical role in coordinating behavior and considering others, with single neurons encoding behavior-related variables and representing different mental models of others depending on context. Maladaptive social cognition in individuals with autism spectrum disorder may stem from a preference for self-centered perspectives over others. Aberrant MPFC activity in autistic individuals while mentalizing others can be explained by this hypothesis.

From Observed Action Identity to Social Affordances

G. A. Orban et al.

Summary: Research findings show that neurons in the monkey anterior intraparietal area (AIP) and its putative human homologue (phAIP) exhibit selectivity for observed manipulative actions, with stable identity readout for observed actions across visual formats. While human neurons demonstrate greater invariance and can generalize from observed actions to action verbs. These properties are attributed to the convergence of superior temporal signals in AIP concerning observed body movements and changes in the body-object relationship, ultimately promoting social behavior.
