Navigating the Shifting Landscape of Engagement in Northern Research: Perspectives from Early Career Researchers

Anita Lafferty et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an examination of research in northern Canada and its ties to extractive, colonial practices, with a focus on community and Nation-engaged practises. Early career researchers (ECRs) from a range of disciplines engage with the communities and Indigenous Nations they work in, discussing approaches to respectful engagement, knowledge translation, and responsibilities for engagement. The Five R's of research-relevance, reciprocity, respect, responsibility, and relationship-are found to ensure the benefits of Western-derived knowledge for the communities and Nations worked alongside by ECRs.
