Modifying Cr/CrN composite structure by Fe addition: Toward manufacturing cost-effective and tough hard coatings

Jiayi He et al.

Summary: Fe alloying was used to improve the processing of Cr/CrN composite coatings, resulting in dense Cr-Fe alloy targets fabricated at a lower sintering temperature. The hardness and toughness of the coatings were enhanced through solution strengthening, leading to a pearlite-like distribution of Cr(Fe) and (Cr,Fe)N in the coating structure for improved crack bridging and strain relaxation.
