Emerging Nanocellulose Technologies: Recent Developments

Akira Isogai

Summary: Nanocelluloses have unique morphologies, characteristics, and surface nanostructures, and can be prepared from abundant and renewable plant biomass resources. They have the potential to contribute to the establishment of a sustainable society and help overcome global environmental issues. However, overcoming fundamental and application-related issues is necessary for the further expansion of nanocelluloses.

Analysis of celluloses, plant holocelluloses, and wood pulps by size-exclusion chromatography/multi-angle laser-light scattering

Yuko Ono et al.

Summary: Size-exclusion chromatography with multi-angle laser-light scattering and refractive index detection (SEC/MALLS/RI) provides detailed information on the number- and weight-average molar masses, molar mass distributions, conformations, and linear/branched structures of polymers. By dissolving in a solvent system similar to 8% (w/w) LiC1/DMAc, analysis can be conducted on pure celluloses, chemical wood pulps, and plant holocelluloses. The results vary depending on the cellulose and holocellulose resources, with linear and random-coil conformations observed in pure celluloses and high-molar-mass cellulose fractions. Softwood holocellulose and bleached kraft pulp, on the other hand, exhibit alkali-stable cellulose/glucomannan branched structures in the high-molar-mass fractions.

Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Films Filled with Halloysite Nanotubes/Wax Hybrid Microspheres

Lorenzo Lisuzzo et al.

Summary: The design and preparation of novel HPC/wax/halloysite nanocomposites have led to films with good hydrophobic properties and surface protection capabilities. Based on measurements of contact angle, sliding angle, and vapor permeability of the composite materials, these composites show potential gas barrier effects.

Nanocellulose/polyethylene nanocomposite sheets prepared from an oven-dried nanocellulose by elastic kneading

Toru Noguchi et al.

Summary: Nanocellulose-reinforced polyethylene composite sheets were successfully prepared by utilizing an oven-drying and elastic kneading method to incorporate TEMPO-CNFs, showing linear increases in yield stress and modulus with increasing TEMPO-CNF content up to around 8 vol%. No aggregates of TEMPO-CNFs were detected in the composite sheets, indicating a successful reinforcement of polyethylene.
