String theory, non-empirical theory assessment, and the context of pursuit

Frank Cabrera

Summary: This paper analyzes the radical disagreement over the adequacy of string theory, attributing the controversy to a failure to properly distinguish between the context of justification and the context of pursuit. Some explain the prominence of string theory as a result of a methodological revolution, while others see it as a case of science gone awry. The author argues that a clear distinction between these contexts is needed to resolve the current controversy in fundamental physics.

Model independent analysis of supernova data, dark energy, trans-Planckian censorship and the swampland

Lavinia Heisenberg et al.

Summary: In this Letter, the model-independent reconstruction of the expansion and growth functions from Pantheon supernova data is considered, using shifted Chebyshev polynomials and maximum-likelihood fit. The obtained results show the possibility of determining the growth function without assuming a specific model, and compare with predictions of two classes of Dark Energy models, constraining the parameters in these models.

Machine learning and cosmographic reconstructions of quintessence and the swampland conjectures

Ruben Arjona et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates model independent reconstructions of quintessence and the swampland conjectures using machine learning and cosmography. The synergy between theoretical analyses and ML provides key insights on dark energy and modified gravity. Model independent tests of modified gravity cosmologies suggest mild deviations from general relativity, which could be further explored with upcoming large-scale structure surveys.

Generalizing the swampland: Embedding P(X,φ) inflationary theories in a curved multifield space

Wei-Chen Lin et al.

Summary: This study explores the embedding of a P(X, phi) inflationary theory into a two-field theory with a curved field space metric to examine the relation between different conjectures. The method fits into a special type of two-field model but is not exact due to limitations on the effective mass of the heavy field. Deviations in speed of sound calculations between the two theories are quantified, with a focus on defining an upper bound for the first potential slow-roll parameter in the two-field picture.
