Exploring the impact of COVID-19 and restrictions to daily living as a result of social distancing within veterans with pre-existing mental health difficulties

Dominic Murphy et al.

Summary: Emerging data suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has adverse consequences on the mental health of the general public. However, little is known about the needs of veterans with pre-existing mental health difficulties during this time. This study found that the symptoms of common mental disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder were exacerbated by the pandemic among veterans. Lack of social support and increased stressors related to COVID-19 were consistently associated with more severe mental health difficulties.

Longitudinal Examination of COVID-19 Public Health Measures on Mental Health for Rural Patients With Serious Mental Illness

Natalie B. Riblet et al.

Summary: The study found that most rural patients with serious mental illness did not experience significant changes in symptoms before and during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, older patients were more likely to report worse symptoms during this time. Access to treatment and support appeared to contribute to the resilience of rural patients in facing the pandemic. Further research on longer-term outcomes is necessary to fully understand the impact of the pandemic on rural patients with serious mental illness.

Mental health toll from the coronavirus: Social media usage reveals Wuhan residents' depression and secondary trauma in the COVID-19 outbreak

Bu Zhong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between social media usage and mental health during the peak of Wuhan's COVID-19 outbreak. The results show a relationship between social media usage and depression and secondary trauma, but no direct relation between health behavior change and mental health conditions. Excessive use of social media may lead to mental health issues, so taking a break from social media can be beneficial for overall well-being during a pandemic.
