Kirigami Engineering-Nanoscale Structures Exhibiting a Range of Controllable 3D Configurations

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Kirigami structures offer a promising approach to transform flat films into complex 3D structures, with distinct buckling-induced configurations achievable through design and analysis. In situ electron microscopy experiments and finite element analyses accurately predict out-of-plane modes and stress-strain responses, presenting a step forward in characterizing thin films. The utility of out-of-plane configurations in creating micro- and nanoscale systems, such as optical scanning micromirrors and nanorobotics, is significant as kirigami dimensions approach sub-micrometer scales challenging to achieve with conventional technologies.

Electromechanically reconfigurable optical nano-kirigami

Shanshan Chen et al.

Summary: The authors present a novel nanokirigami with optical functionalities, demonstrating large range nano-kirigami deformations achieved via attractive electrostatic forces between gold nanostructures and silicon substrate. Optical reconfigurations with high modulation contrast and small unit size are achieved at visible and near-infrared wavelengths.

Highly anisotropic and flexible piezoceramic kirigami for preventing joint disorders

Ying Hong et al.

Summary: This study introduces a highly anisotropic piezoelectric network composite sensor based on kirigami structure to monitor multiple information of joint motions and distinguish them within one sensor unit. By designing a functional piezoceramic kirigami with honeycomb network structure, the sensor achieves stretchability, high sensitivity, and high anisotropy towards bending directions.
