Second-order grey-scale texture analysis of pleural ultrasound images to differentiate acute respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic pulmonary edema

Claudia Brusasco et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) analysis of lung ultrasound (LUS) images can differentiate between acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE). The results showed statistical differences in GLCM textural features between ARDS and CPE patients when compared to a healthy control group. The proposed quantitative method demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing normal lung, ARDS, and CPE.

Point-of-care lung ultrasound in neonatology: classification into descriptive and functional applications

Francesco Raimondi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of lung ultrasound in neonatology, including descriptive and functional uses. The proposed SAFE protocol for emergency functional LUS in critical neonates is highlighted, with potential future development linked to quantitative evaluation and computer-aided diagnostic techniques. Opportunities for teaching LUS and expanding the research network are also briefly presented.

Lung Ultrasound Findings in the Postanesthesia Care Unit Are Associated With Outcome After Major Surgery: A Prospective Observational Study in a High-Risk Cohort

Laurent Zieleskiewicz et al.

Summary: Postoperative pulmonary complications are associated with increased morbidity, and early detection of alveolar consolidation and pleural effusion by lung ultrasound after extubation may help identify high-risk patients for preemptive treatment. Further study is needed to determine the effect of ultrasound-guided intervention for patients at high risk of postoperative pulmonary complications.

PORTABLE POCKET-SIZED ULTRASOUND SCANNER FOR THE EVALUATION OF LUNG INVOLVEMENT IN CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 PATIENTS

David Bennett et al.

Summary: This study confirms the potential of portable pocket-sized ultrasound imaging of the lung in COVID-19 patients. Portable pocket-sized ultrasound scanners are affordable, easy to use, and provide equivalent non-invasive assessment of severity and dynamic observation of lung lesions in COVID-19 patients compared to standard scanners.

Summary: Comparing lung ultrasound scores (LUS) of patients with/without PPC in the 24-hour postoperative period can help identify characteristics with the potential of recognizing patients at risk. Patients classified as ASA 3 were significantly more represented in the PPC+ group.
