Anchoring of atmospheric teleconnection patterns by Arctic Sea ice loss and its link to winter cold anomalies in East Asia

Muyuan Li L et al.

Summary: This study examines the physical processes underlying recent winter cold anomalies over East Asia, finding that the cold anomaly is influenced by warming in the North Atlantic, sea ice loss in the Barents-Kara Sea, and atmospheric teleconnection patterns. Furthermore, the role of sea ice loss in the Barents-Kara Sea seems to be crucial in enhancing the cold anomaly over East Asia. The study also highlights the importance of different North Atlantic sea surface temperature patterns in affecting the position of the cold anomaly region.

Evaluation of the Forecast Performance for Extreme Cold Events in East Asia With Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Data Sets From ECMWF

Guokun Dai et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the forecast skill for East Asian extreme cold events from 2015-2019 using the subseasonal-to-seasonal operational forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The results show that numerical models can capture extreme cold events with a lead time of 7 days, and long-persistent extreme cold events have a longer skillful forecast lead time, potentially due to high intrinsic predictability. This suggests the possibility of making skillful forecasts for subseasonal-to-seasonal and beyond time scales.
