The study shows that CrAl/CrAlN duplex layer coatings significantly improve erosion resistance by enhancing adhesion strength and preventing peeling off of the coating.
In this article, CrAlN single layer coatings and three kinds of CrAl/CrAlN duplex layer coatings with different depositing Ar/N-2 flow ratios were deposited on the TA15 alloy's surface by RF magnetron sputtering technology, and the erosive wear characteristics of them were studied. The main phases of the CrAl/CrAlN duplex layer coatings are Cr3Al7N, AlN, and Cr2N. Three-dimensional surface micrographs of CrAlN/CrAl duplex layer coatings were examined by AFM. Based on the self-designed erosion test equipment, the erosion test of CrAlN coatings, CrAl/CrAlN coatings and TA15 alloy was carried out. The results show that the erosion rate of the CrAl/CrAlN coating can be only 1/40 that of the TA15 alloy. Droplets formed during the process of coating preparation can accelerate the erosion of the coatings. The CrAl interlayer mainly improves the erosion resistance of the CrAl/CrAlN duplex layer coating from improving the coating's adhesion strength and preventing the coating from peeling off.
