Matching Methods for Causal Inference with Time-Series Cross-Sectional Data

Kosuke Imai et al.

Summary: This article proposes a matching method for analyzing time-series cross-sectional data, which improves the validity of causal inference by reducing model dependence and offering intuitive diagnostics. The method matches each treated observation with control observations from other units in the same time period that have an identical treatment history, and further refines the matched set using standard matching and weighting methods. The article also demonstrates the proposed methodology through simulation and empirical studies.

On the Use of Two-Way Fixed Effects Regression Models for Causal Inference with Panel Data

Kosuke Imai et al.

Summary: The two-way linear fixed effects regression is commonly used for estimating causal effects from panel data, but its ability to adjust for unobserved confounders relies on the assumption of linear additive effects. It is also important to note that the equivalence to the difference-in-differences estimator may not hold under more general settings commonly encountered in applied research.
