Pyronaridine: An update of its pharmacological activities and mechanisms of action

Christian Bailly

Summary: PYR is a potent erythrocytic schizonticide with antimalarial activity against drug-resistant Plasmodium, also showing antitumor effects and efficacy against other parasitic diseases. Its mechanisms of action involve inhibition of hemozoin formation, interference with DNA metabolism, potential immune modulation, and implication in mitochondrial oxidative pathways. The diverse health benefits of pyronaridine are highlighted through its various biological actions.

Summary: Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) have shown in vitro inhibition against SARS-CoV-2 and have anti-inflammatory effects that can help in the treatment of severe COVID-19 cases. Clinical studies on the effectiveness of ACTs, particularly artesunate/pyronaridine, for COVID-19 infections are now supported by sufficient evidence.

Identification of SARS-CoV-2 inhibitors using lung and colonic organoids

Yuling Han et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed lung and colonic organoid models using human pluripotent stem cells, which demonstrate susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. These models are valuable for studying the infection of the virus and screening drugs, with potential therapeutic implications for COVID-19.
