Are Bioactive Molecules from Seaweeds a Novel and Challenging Option for the Prevention of HPV Infection and Cervical Cancer Therapy?-A Review

Marius Alexandru Moga et al.

Summary: Cervical cancer, caused by HPV infection, is a major cause of cancer-related death in women globally. Seaweeds contain bioactive compounds with potential anti-HPV and anti-cervical cancer properties. Studies have shown that sulfated polysaccharides, carrageenans, fucoidan, heterofucans, and terpenoids from seaweeds exhibit promising effects against HPV infection and cervical cancer. Further clinical trials are warranted to explore seaweed extracts as a novel therapeutic strategy for cervical cancer.

Recovery of the protein fraction with high antioxidant activity from red seaweed industrial solid residue after agar extraction by subcritical water treatment

Ester Trigueros et al.

Summary: The valorization of industrial solid residue from Gelidium sesquipedale after agar extraction using subcritical water was investigated, revealing high protein content with essential amino acids, a significant carbohydrate fraction, and a substantial amount of ash. The study focused on optimizing protein and carbon fraction extraction/hydrolysis through varying temperature and flow rate, with a key finding that higher temperatures led to degradation of protein. Additionally, the study established a correlation between antioxidant capacity and bioactive compounds in the extracts, with potential applications of the solid residue as fertilizers in agriculture.

Chemical profiling of the Arctic sea lettuce Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta) mass-cultivated on land under controlled conditions for food applications

Michael Y. Roleda et al.

Summary: The increasing use of seaweeds in European cuisine has led to cultivation initiatives funded by the EU. Research shows that long-term cultivation of the sea lettuce Ulva lactuca produces consistently high-quality biomass with nutritional value, providing sufficient minerals for daily dietary intake while posing low health risks from heavy metals. The nutritional value of Ulva, in terms of carbohydrates, protein, and fatty acids, is comparable to selected fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains.

Blind spots in visions of a blue economy could undermine the ocean's contribution to eliminating hunger and malnutrition

Anna K. Farmery et al.

Summary: The focus on production growth in the blue economy has led to flawed assumptions that increased production will automatically improve food security, and that mariculture will replace marine capture fisheries. Addressing these blind spots and taking a broader food system approach is crucial to making blue food production and consumption more equitable and sustainable, while ensuring increased access for those in need.
