Performance of offline passive tracer advection in the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS; v3.6, revision 904)

Kristen M. Thyng et al.

Summary: This study presents an approach and assessment for passive offline tracer advection within the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The offline tracer model is robust and accurate, with skill scores reaching over 99% under certain conditions. Important factors for maintaining high offline accuracy include outputting from the online simulation often enough to resolve the advection timescale, using realistic vertical salinity diffusivity values for offline forcing, and saving results in double precision.
