Vitamin D metabolites, D3and D2, and their independent associations with depression symptoms among adults in the United States

Galya Bigman

Summary: This study examines the independent roles of two metabolites of vitamin D, 25(OH)D-3 and 25(OH)D-2, in mood regulation and their relationship with depression symptoms. The results suggest that individuals who have deficiencies in 25(OH)D-3 and presence of 25(OH)D-2 are more likely to experience depression symptoms. However, the deficiency of 25(OH)D-3 does not have a significant relationship with depression symptoms in the absence of 25(OH)D-2.

Associations of major depressive disorder and related clinical characteristics with 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in middle-aged adults

Corinna Koehnke et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with depression have lower levels of vitamin D, especially those with atypical depression. The severity of symptoms is inversely related to vitamin D levels. These findings suggest that the subtype of depression and symptom severity may have an impact on vitamin D levels.

Androgens and hirsutism score of overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome improved after vitamin D treatment: A randomized placebo controlled clinical trial

Nahla Al-Bayyari et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that weekly treatment with 50,000 IU of vitamin D-3 can improve 25(OH)D levels and decrease hirsutism scores and androgen levels in overweight women with PCOS. These results may lead to increased fertility and better reproductive health for these patients.

Summary: The meta-analysis results showed that vitamin D supplementation did not have significant effects on metabolic parameters of PCOS women with vitamin D deficiency, except for decreasing fasting glucose concentration and total cholesterol concentration. Low dose and high dose vitamin D supplementation were both effective in lowering fasting glucose concentration, while vitamin D supplementation significantly decreased total cholesterol concentration.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is common in PCOS patients and is associated with reproductive ability, metabolic changes, and mental health. Vitamin D supplementation has beneficial effects on improving IR and lipid metabolism in PCOS patients. Understanding the relationship between vitamin D status and symptoms of PCOS patients is clinically significant for treatment and prevention of PCOS.
