Validation of ICON-MIGHTI Thermospheric Wind Observations: 1. Nighttime Red-Line Ground-Based Fabry-Perot Interferometers

Jonathan J. Makela et al.

Summary: The study compared nighttime thermospheric wind observations from ground-based Fabry-Perot Interferometers with data products from the Michelson Interferometer Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) onboard the Ionospheric Connection Explorer. Results showed good agreement between the observations, indicating the validity of the measurement methodology. Differences in estimated wind quantities between the two instrument types could be attributed to gradients in airglow and thermospheric wind fields.
