Geopolymer synthesis using low-grade clays

Morteza Tahmasebi Yamchelou et al.

Summary: Due to the significant contribution of cement production to CO2 emissions, alternative binders have become a sustainable option. Geopolymers have been shown to have performance comparable to or better than ordinary Portland cement and can be made from various source materials. Low grade clays, including natural clay and construction waste, have potential for geopolymer production, but may have lower mechanical performance due to impurities and slower dissolution rates. Various characterisation techniques were used in this study to examine the microstructure and reaction kinetics of geopolymer synthesis using different clays.

Alkali activation of mechanically activated low-grade clay

Morteza Tahmasebi Yamchelou et al.

Summary: Mechanical activation can significantly enhance the reactivity in alkali activated mortar synthesized from low-grade clay by changing the clay structure, increasing the specific surface area, and decreasing the particle size. Although prolonged grinding time did not result in a further increase in compressive strength due to decreased workability, the reactivity was significantly improved as indicated by solid-state MAS NMR, FTIR, and EDS analyses.
