Efficacy of gel-based artificial saliva on Candida colonization and saliva properties in xerostomic post-radiotherapy head and neck cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial

Aroonwan Lam-ubol et al.

Summary: The study found that both oral moisturizing jelly (OMJ) and dry mouth gel (GC) can improve saliva pH and reduce the number of Candida species. OMJ is superior to GC in buffering capacity, while GC may be more effective in improving salivary flow rate.

Independent impact of periodontitis and cardiovascular disease on elevated soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) levels

Gaetano Isola et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with periodontitis and periodontitis + CHD had higher suPAR levels in both plasma and saliva compared to healthy controls and CHD patients. Univariate regression analysis showed that hs-CRP and periodontitis had a significant negative direct effect on suPAR levels in both plasma and saliva. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that periodontitis was the only significant predictor of plasma suPAR levels, while hs-CRP was the only significant predictor of salivary suPAR levels.

The relevance of miRNAs as promising biomarkers in lip cancer

Agnes Assao et al.

Summary: The upregulation of miR-181b, miR-31, and miR-345 expression in actinic cheilitis without epithelial dysplasia and the decrease in the expression of these miRNAs in actinic cheilitis with epithelial dysplasia and in lower lip cancer are potential biomarkers of malignant progression.

Periodontal and caries status in unexplained female infertility: A case-control study

Gul Yildiz Telatar et al.

Summary: The study found that infertile women had higher rates of advanced caries lesions, bleeding on probing, gingival index, probing depth, and clinical attachment level compared to fertile women. The association of periodontitis and dental caries with infertility was found to be significant, indicating a potential role in the etiology of infertility.

Identification of the different salivary Interleukin-6 profiles in patients with periodontitis: A cross-sectional study

Gaetano Isola et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with periodontitis had significantly higher levels of salivary IL-6 compared to healthy subjects; salivary IL-6 levels were negatively correlated with C-reactive protein, number of teeth, CAL, PPD, and FMBS; in patients with periodontitis, salivary IL-6 levels were inversely associated with the number of teeth, and directly associated with the extent of periodontitis (CAL, PPD, FMBS).

Role of Dentistry in Global Health: Challenges and Research Priorities

F. N. Hugo et al.

Summary: Despite some improvements in global oral health, significant challenges remain, with oral health care seen as a privilege rather than a right. The Lancet issue on oral health in July 2019 highlighted the importance of oral health, but more efforts are needed to elevate oral health as a global public health priority.
