Evaluating Bayesian Radiocarbon-dated Event Count (REC) models for the study of long-term human and environmental processes

W. Christopher Carleton

Summary: The study explores an alternative Bayesian approach to model radiocarbon-dated event counts, and uses a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to estimate the parameters of a count-based regression model. The results suggest that this method is widely applicable and could form the basis of a new class of quantitative models for exploring long-term human and environmental processes.

Sum things are not what they seem: Problems with point-wise interpretations and quantitative analyses of proxies based on aggregated radiocarbon dates

W. Christopher Carleton et al.

Summary: This study highlights critical issues with using radiocarbon dated assemblages as proxies for past human and environmental phenomena, stressing that they can easily be misinterpreted due to conflating process variation and chronological uncertainty. The paper calls for increased awareness and skepticism regarding the use of established proxies in point-wise comparisons.
