Seismic Performance Levels of a Large Underground Subway Station in Different Soil Foundations

Haiyang Zhuang et al.

Summary: A soil constitutive model for dynamic large deformation of soft soil was developed, and a finite element model was built to simulate static and dynamic coupling interaction between soil and underground structure. The study investigated seismic performance and damage mechanisms of large underground subway stations in different soil foundations, finding that the interaction mechanism changes with soil type and peak ground motion acceleration. Regulations in Chinese codes may not be suitable for evaluating seismic performance in soft soil foundations or strong earthquakes, requiring specialized time-history analysis methods instead. Five seismic performance levels were defined based on inter-storey drift angle and corresponding earthquake damage states.
