This paper investigates a correction to the Archard equation by considering the influence of surface conditions and parameters like hardness, roughness, and slope after surface modification. Experimental results validate the proposed correction, showing the importance of these factors in predicting wear behavior.
Archard equation is the basic relationship that is used to describe and predict the wear behavior of the parts. The main drawback of this equation is to neglect the surface modifications and limit the role of the surface condition to the value of the soft surface hardness to obtain the wear rate. In this paper, the correction has been applied to this equation and considered the impression of the surface condition and parameters like roughness, kurtosis factor, and skewness after surface modification with the diffusive feature, and proposed correction has been examined by experimental results. The surface modification of titanium was applied by the PACVD method. To study and measure the surface parameters, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the surface morphology and measure the surface parameters. Also, the Pin on the disk wear test was applied to the samples. Finally, the experimental correction of the Archard equation was applied by considering the hardness of hard surface contact, surface roughness, and slope angle value.
