A cutaneous mechanoneural interface for neuroprosthetic feedback

Summary: The study introduces a cutaneous mechanoneural interface involving a muscle actuator coupled to a natively pedicled skin flap, which successfully elicited native dermal mechanotransducers in rat hindlimbs. Different patterns of electrical stimulation independently engaged slowly adapting and rapidly adapting mechanotransducers, recreating an array of cutaneous sensations. This interface has potential for integration with current prosthetic technologies for tactile feedback.
