Short moan call reveals seasonal occurrence and diel-calling pattern of crabeater seals in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica

Summary: This study describes the seasonal occurrence and diel-calling pattern of crabeater seals in the Maud Rise of the Southern Ocean, as well as a new call type of short moan. The call rates of short moans were highest at night in August, followed by September, with no diel variations from April to July. The distance to the sea ice edge and the month of the year were identified as the most important predictors of call occurrence and rates of crabeater seals.
